'Beauty and the Beast' Is Now the Highest-Grossing PG Movie Ever

Beauty and the Beast has passed yet another milestone.
Bill Condon (The Twilight Saga) directed 2017’s Beauty and the Beast from a screenplay by Stephen Chbosky (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) and Evan Spiliotopoulos (The Huntsman: Winter’s War), which starred Dan Stevens (Legion) as Prince Adam/The Beast and Emma Watson (Harry Potter) as Belle. Watson was originally tapped to play Belle in Guillermo del Toro’s Beauty and the Beast flick for Warner Bros., but when the director dropped the project, she took Disney up on their offer to star in their remake. It looks like it all worked out in the end.
A recent report over at Box Office Mojo indicates that Beauty and the Beast has earned $487,594,615 domestically. This just edges Finding Dory out of the former #1 slot, as that MPAA PG-rated movie brought in $486,295,561 during its initial theatrical run back in 2016. It wasn't crowned for long, though, as the Disney hit has now surpassed the Disney-Pixar movie. If you combine G and PG ratings, the live action Beauty and the Beast is also the highest grossing movie, as well.
Internationally, Beauty and the Beast is an even bigger success and will probably wind up being one of the highest-grossing movies of 2017 overall. To date, the movie has grossed a grand total of $1.185 billion worldwide. Finding Dory made just a hair over $1 billion last year, so Beauty and the Beast has also been more appealing to audiences worldwide than the Finding Nemo sequel was. As it stands, Beauty and the Beast is the highest-grossing movie of the year, but The Fate of the Furious is closing in quickly, with $1.158 billion already in box office receipts. It should wind up overtaking Beauty and the Beast by the time all is said and done.
With box office numbers like that, it’s possible Disney would be interested in producing more stories around Belle and Prince Adam. Stevens has already mentioned that he would be interested in reprising his role in another film, though he doesn’t know how that would work considering that Prince Adam is no longer the Beast. Interestingly, Watson thinks she has a way to circumvent issues surrounding a sequel. It seems like both Stevens and Watson are game to return for another film, should it happen. Until then, they can continue basking in the success of this year’s Beauty and the Beast.
