Though "Suicide Squad" is already earning big bucks overseas and is primed to break an opening record domestically, the DC blockbuster will not be playing in China as of now.
THR is reporting Suicide Squad is unlikely to be released in China, with sources saying the film hasn’t been put on the release schedule of China Film Group, the distributor that manages the import of foreign movies; release dates on this schedule are usually planned out at least two months in advance. One Chinese executive simply said, “They think this is not a good film to release in China.”
While many nations have ratings systems to give different audiences an idea of what movies are for them, China does not. So if a movie isn’t suitable for all audiences, it’s a no go in China. A source familiar with the matter told Business Insider that the film is likely to be banned based on the rule that "propagating passive or negative outlook on life, worldview and value system" is forbidden. It doesn't help that the movie also has a supernatural aspect, another no-no by the standards of the China Film Co., the state-owned body responsible for the importing and releasing of foreign films in the country.
The movie received a PG-13 rating, unlike R-rated “Deadpool,” which also didn’t get cleared for China, and Warner Bros. even changed the local title of the film to “Task Force X.” And it has a well-known cast, including Viola Davis, Margot Robbie and Will Smith, one of the most popular American actors in China. Suicide Squad isn’t the first superhero movie of 2016 to not be released in China; earlier this year Deadpool was banned due to its R-rated content, and the film went on to still break box office records, both for 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise and R-rated movies.
Suicide Squad arrived in theaters on August 5, 2016, followed by Wonder Woman on June 2, 2017; Justice League on November 17, 2017; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; an untitled DC Film on October 5, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14, 2019; an untitled DC film on November 1, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020. The Flash and Batman solo movie are currently without release dates.
As it stands, it looks like if fans in China want to see the DCEU’s latest picture, they’ll have to see it in another country.
