Deadpool 2 has found its Cable, in the form of actor Josh Brolin.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Deadpool’s “X-Force” collaborator Cable will be played by none other than Josh Brolin. Casting for the part was highly competitive, with everyone from Michael Shannon to "Stranger Things" star David Harbour to Brad Pitt mentioned as contenders. Writer Rhett Reese confirmed the news on Twitter:

Cable was co-created by Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld and writer Louise Simonson and is described as in many ways being the opposite of Deadpool: a man who is a leader and used to being obeyed, who is very controlled but with an aura of simmering violence. In the comics, Cable was from the future and was the adult of Scott Summers, also known as the X-Man Cyclops.

In addition to the casting of Brolin and the return of Reynolds and Baccarin, Brianna Hildebrand will be reprising her role as Negasonic Teenage Warhead. Meanwhile, Deadpool and Cable will be joined by their once and future X-Force teammate Domino, who will be played by Zazie Beetz of FX’s Atlanta. With the heroic casting announcements out of the way, all that’s left is to find out who will be the Deadpool 2 villain. David Leitch is in the director's chair for the sequel. Deadpool 2 will start shooting in June and heads to screens next year.

Brolin, who was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in 2009's Milk, is a familiar name to comic book movie fans, aside from starring in the pretty turgid DC comics adaptation Jonah Hex as the titular cowboy hero, Brolin is perhaps better known currently as the voice of Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and is due to appear in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War as the Mad Titan. Brolin has been on a busy streak with a lot of his work culminating this fall. He leads the cast of Granite Mountain, Joseph Kosinski’s firefighting adventure that opens Sept. 22 and also stars with Benicio del Toro in Soldado, the sequel to Sicario. He also appears in George Clooney’s ensemble Suburbicon, which opens Nov. 3, and stars in the drama The Legacy of the Whitetail Deer Hunter that opens Dec 25.
