Kurt Russell is set to play Santa Claus opposite Judah Lewis and Darby Camp in an untitled Christmas movie for Netflix.
Kurt Russell has signed on to play Santa Claus in an untitled Netflix Christmas Movie, which will see two siblings trying to prove the reality of Santa by catching him at work on camera. Yet when they accidentally cause his sleigh to crash in Chicago, they have to help him get Christmas back on track. The script was written by Matt Lieberman, who wrote The Addams Family stop-motion project that is in production for MGM. The script, which was once entitled 12/24, was based on an original idea by Lieberman and Designated Survivor creator David Guggenheim.
According to THR, starring alongside Russell in the untitled Netflix Christmas film are Judah Lewis (from Netflix’s The Babysitter) and Darby Camp (Big Little Lies), with Chris Columbus attached as producer. Clay Kaytis (co-director of The Angry Birds Movie) is on board to direct the film which will also mix in CG elements. In addition to working on Angry Birds, Kaytis has served as animator in a number of films, such as Chicken Little, Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph, and Frozen. Filming begins January for a Holiday 2018 release.
This is quite the departure from Kurt Russell's two massive movies that hit theaters earlier this year, The Fate of the Furious, where he plays Mr. Nobody alongside Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, where he plays Ego the Living Planet, the father of Star-Lord (Chris Pratt). The actor doesn't have any other future projects in the works, although there is talk that he could return in Fast & Furious 9, but that has yet to be confirmed. The actor is certainly well-known for playing hardened characters in the past, so it will be interesting to see him portray Santa Claus.
